hello

Please can you advise me...

what behaviour in gouramis indicates that they are ready to breed? - not got a clue on this one

Why is it important to allow the fry to access air above the water surface? - is it simply to breath?

What could prevent the baby getting access to the air above the water? - would this be floating plants? or condensation trapping glass?

thanks

Laura

Sorry but if you want to breed these fish you should be doing your own research.

Their are plenty out there and loads on this site which the search button works well.

Also what fish are u wanting to breed as their many types. Also basic search will tell you that fry cant breath air for around the first 2 weeks or so so u need aeration.

Once you have a good size bare breeding ready and matured and you have the nesseray first foods ready to go then I'm sure your get loads of help advising you on what to do.

Male gouramis build a bubblenest at the surface (a pile of foamy bubbles).
He will then display to the female and show off to her. Once they breed he will put the eggs into the bubblenest and chase the female away. She will hide at the other end of the tank.

The fry need warm air for when they start to develop their labyrinth organ. This organ allows gouramis and bettas the ability to take air from the atmosphere. The air must be the same temperature as the water for the fry. If they breathe in cold air it can kill them. Once they are a couple of months old they will be able to take normal air temperature.

Floating plants and oily films across the surface will prevent the fry being able to get air. An air stone bubbling away gently in one corner of the tank should prevent the oily film which is usually caused by fish food and waste in the water.

Thank you for your information; it has been very useful.

Thanks hunny!! i knew you wouldnt let me down; your information was perfect. I am handing in the project today. I wouldnt of got it finished without u!! xxx

LOL I must of been grumpy last night, I'm not usually that bad...... Ok yes searching is a good tool though

Also your very polite.

The first thing i would do is to get live foods sorted, some gourami's have very small fry and you need rotefers as a first food, some people use crushed egg yolk but this is very polluating and plenty of water changes is needed.
From about 5-7 days you then want to go onto newly hatched brine shrimp which need's to hatched in a brine water mix and takes 24 hours to hatch.

What type do u have also?

i do not have any gouramis currently, i needed the information for a project for my course, i managed to hand it in on time this morning. i would like to get a pair of sparkling gouramis. however i have not yet had the time to read up on them, soon though i hope.

no worries, everyone is grump sometimes.

i dont get grouchy though lifes to short!!!

Sparkling gouramis are one of the hardest of these fish to breed, the build a small bubble nest under lefe's.

If wanting to breed something easy then pearl's and betta splendes are relativaly easy.
