I need help I don't know what happened to my betta he is in a tank all by hisself and yesterday he looked just fine and was eatting just fine today it look's like something ripped off some of his fins and they are all messed up and I just tried to feed him and he didn't want to eat. the only thing I have in his tank is two silk plants and a heater the only thing I know that it might of been is maybe his fins got into the filter it is a round tank and the filter hangs down from the top it is hard to explain but I have had him in there for about 2 months now and had no problems. Does anyone know what it could be?

Can you post an image so we can see? It could be fin rot if it looks like something is ripping away at his fins - sometimes there's a white or black edging around the affected area.

I can't post a pic right now but I do think that it is fin rot I have been reading alot on the internet and I talked to a person at Petsmart about it. Have you ever had fin rot on any of your fish before? If so what med's do you recomend is the best? I bought some of the betafix for it. I looked at the other kind but none of them said safe for betta's so I wasn't sure but in one book they had at the store it said you could use melafix do you think both of those are about the same? Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.

I do have one boy who's battling finrot from the petstore. Bettafix is an ok brand to use but melafix has twice the potency. I battled his condition for a little over a week with Bettafix, then switched over to Melafix. The purpose of both is to basically not only eliminate the bacteria, but increase the growth of the fin while healing. I'm using Melafix on another betta who's fin got slightly torn, and it's healing beautifully. Melafix has a certain number of drops per gallon dosage, and you'll want to be careful, half the dosage for a betta to begin with would be the way to go. Though it's good to have Bettafix on hand for minor injuries to the fin, I would consider Mela to be for the serious conditions.

Thank you again so much for your advice. I am going to go ahead and get some Melafix today. I sure do hope it helps him. When your fish has it do they not eat? Yesterday mine didn't want to eat and than this morning I tried feeding him and he didn't want to eat either so I was worried about him.

Hmm, the eating could be probably because he's sick, just like land animals don't feel the need to eat when they're sick? Giving him a day or two of fasting won't hurt your fish. I've certainly put mine through a couple of days of fast at times while I was learning their eating preferences.

Ok I will try not to worry too much and hopefully he will start eatting soon. Thanks again :)
