I have a baby frontosa who has not been eating lately and just seems down all the time. When the light is on, he usually stays in one place in the tank and is always breathing deeply (i can see his mouth opening and closing if that makes sense..) When i turn the light off he swims around a little bit but still ends up in the same spot. Hes always towards the bottom of the tank, most of the times it looks like he literally laying on the gravel. When i put food in the tank he will eat it and just spit it back out. Ive tried feeding him all types of pellets and flakes. He used to eat the flakes but now he is spitting them out. He looks alot skinnier than before and im very worried. It all started when I bought a new fish a few weeks ago. Its a jewel about the same size as my frontosa (1.5'') although hes getting bigger because hes been eating more. I fed them guppies yesterday and the frontosa was able to get one and the jewel had between 7 or 10. He is alot more aggressive than my frontosa and im worried this might be the problem. I dont see him getting "beat up," i do see them chase eachother every once in a while it looks like they snap at eachother i dont know if its playing or if its something more serious.. I dont know if i should get rid of the jewel or buy a divider for my tank. I have a 15 gallon tank and i use a bubbler to have more oxygen and make it feel as if it were bigger. The water has been tested and it is fine and I do water changes weekly. someone PLEASE HELP ME SAVE MY BABY. I just put a rock in the tank to create more hiding spaces and changed the arrangement around (for now). Do i get rid of the jewel or could there be something else wrong with my frontosa? PLEASE HELP.

its the jewel if you take it out i think your other fish will pick up again jewels are notoriously agressive and to be honest 15 gallons is far too small for those fish no matter how many bubbles you have running
sorry to be the bearer of bad news

its a temporary tank. i am getting a larger one this weekend which will be between 55 and 75 gallons.

is it necessary to place a divider in until i get rid of the jewel? The jewel will be gone by Friday night or Saturday morning.

i would give it a go poor frontosa must be scared stiff

Thank you. Also, what do you suggest I feed him? He never seemed to like the pellets i dont know if it is because they are too big for him or if he just doesnt like them. He eats flakes but I want to start feeding him other types of things.. Also do you suggest I not buy any other fish? I want to have more than 2 fish but i really do not want an incident like this to happen again.

i wouldnt buy anymore fish untill you have a larger tank you could try your frontosa on some live food how big is the fish

he is about 1.5" i dont want to keep him solely on live food because many carry diseases and all sorts of stuff. what kind of frozen foods would be good for him?

brine shrimp, blood worm ,tubifex i found that my small cichlids wont eat much pellet food either not even grade 2 crumb
i feed my fish live food which i culture myself from ebay i feed mine white worms, walter worms, micro worms and grindal worms that way i know what the worms have been fed and there safe

Really sorry to read this about your frontosa, they really dont mix well with some fish you have to be so carefull what you mix them with. I lost 3 because I put in a pleco!

aww thats a shame, my frontosas are about 3.5" and eat tetra doramin pellets, bloodworm, prawn and krill. they are in a tank that is divided, the other half has rotkeil severums and cutteri cichlids, but there was also 2 pink tailed characins which are now happily living with the frontosas and a green panchax which decided to jump the divider, all living happily together!
its a shame the poor fella died, they don't cope too well with bullying, mine don't have any problems with other fish but some of them bully each other!

It is a shame and before i bought the jewel i asked the man at the store if he would be ok with a baby frontosa about 1.5'' and he said theyd be fine together because they were both cichlids and live in the same water. now, this store is very reputable and the employees are usually very knowledgeable when it comes to fish but there is a different place that i always call if i am having a problem who usually help me much more and when i called yesterday afternoon the guy said that they jewel should not in fact be living with my frontosa because he needs a different pH and because he is a south american cichlid and the frontosa is an african cichlid. I learn something new every day but unfortunately i was told that fact too late in the game. I feel terrible, i loved that fish but i learned and will know for next time. I am going to return the jewel this weekend and tell them that he "beat up" and killed my frontosa.

Jewel cichlids are african, but a completely different region to frontosa, the frontosa being a lake fish and the jewel being a river dweller, Jewel can sometimes be mixed with SA and CA cichilds often confusing them for ca or sa cichlid. Its not always good to rely on the word of your LFS people do get things wrong allways check on here or look up information on the net.
