good news is you dont HAVE to buy aquatic soil. You can buy root tabs that you place in the gravel/sand underneath the plants. You have to replace these every month or so. The plants grow better in the sand because it's easier for the roots to spread out meaning they have more access to nutrients (well i think, might be better asking some one else?) liquid ferts dont require anything, just mix with water and pour them in the tank. I use tropica plant nutrition and as far as i know its one of the best available (its under the aqua care brand in the uk)

if your having a trough/plant pot at the back then i think the ADA substrate is reccomended but i've never used it.

It all depends on what you want. I have quite a few plants and only use root tabs and ferts :good:

Are you injecting co2? This (combined with lighting) will have the largest effect on your plants. Ferts normaly ccome next after these two. Ian h suggestion of root tabs would be a good start, also look at adding trace elements as these will have a big impact. For a general ferteliser Easy Life ProFito would be a good choice.
hope this helps
