Hi,
Within the last couple of hours my Silver Dollar has grown a puffy roll around one of his eyes. I assume this is popeye but I have never actually dealt with this disease before so I wondered if there is someone out there who has experienced this and who could make give me a second opinion?

I've just popped in the right amount of anti-internal bacteria from my standard medicine stash, it says it treats it but I'm open to any suggestions from anyone who knows about what's wrong my little guy or how best to treat it.

His name is Clifford and he is about 3 months old. None of my other fish have the problem, they all are in good health.

THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME, I APPRECIATE IT!

hi a few questions first to help us understand your set up
could you tell us how big your tank is, what fish are in there and how long its been set up?
also could you give us your water stats in Ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte?

popeye can easily be brought on by poor water conditions/bacterial infections caused by poor water quality :)

It's a jewel vision 260 which is 150cm long, 50cm high & 30cm wide (40cm at widest bowed part)
It holds 260 litres of water
It's filtered by a Tetratech EX1200 (it cycles 1200 litres per hour at full throttle which is big enough for 500 litres)

what fish are in there and how long its been set up?
The community consists of one of each of the following:
silver dollar
kissing gourami
parrot fish
goldfish (rescued after being par-boiled in a weird little pet shop with very old equipment)
yellow 3 spot gourami
moonlight gourami
bristlenose catfish (rescued from same tank as the gold fish)
angelfish
tinfoil barb
red claw crab
----------
The tank has been set up for about 5 months and populated for just over 4 months
It's possibly the most placid community I've ever had, there are no behavioural issues at all.

also could you give us your water stats in Ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte?
The ph is a constant 7.5 (it only raised from our ph7 tap water because of the bog wood.)
the Nitrite is <0.3 mg/l
I dont think my tetratest loborett test kit contains the tests for Amonia or nitrAte, is that something I can work out from the results I already have?
The kit contains tests for : PH, NO-2 (there is a bottle for NO2 as well but I can find the info on that in the booklet), CO2, KH & GH

The water & tank looks perfect and gets a 20% water change every 5 weeks and I have the bubbles on when the light is on. I'd be very surprised if the water was a problem.

THANKS VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME! :flowers:

try changing 20% more often, especially since you have no way to test for ammonia or nitrate...realistically should be done once a week along with a gravel vac to get rid of the muck on the bottom which can cause water quality issues.
up the changes and see if his eye gets better.

just reviewed the test kit options...looks like one you'd buy to monitor planted conditions...with co2 kh and gh and pH...you sreally should have an ammonia, nitrtite, nitrate kit.
best of luck. :good:

Are you saying I should replace 20% of the water once a week or just vacuum the gravel once a week? Replacing 52litres of water every week seems to me like it would cause them an awful lot of disturbance and distress so I just want to be sure that I've picked you up correctly. I do vacuum when I do a water change or if I see a build up but so far there has been a pathetic amount of muck coming out, I think my oversized filter really does the business. I used to vacuum my other tank at least once every two weeks but this new set-up doesn't seem to need anywhere near as much, well not yet anyway. Would it be a problem to overclean the gravel considering I have a bristle-nose and a crab?
I'll get myself a new test kit once I get my car back from the garage in a day or so. Thanks a million for your advice, it's always great to hear from people with experience with problems I'm worried about. I've been keeping fish since I was about 5, 21 years ago and found my Nans old fishbowl but I've never actually had direct issues with popeye so I was distressed to see it but....
:hyper: you'll be pleased to hear that his eye is completely normal again. :hyper:
