Playsand/gravel

hey all question. i have black gravel its the really small stone type gravel. can i cover it with play sand rather than taking the gravel out??? i think i would prefere sand

No, you can't cover gravel with sand; the sand falls through the gaps and ends up on the bottom. You should be able to syphon the old gravel out if you take the end off your gravel cleaner though, especially if it's fine.

Just remember to wash the sand really really well before you use it.

I just washed 35kg of sand to put in mine and I tried doing one whole bag (12.5kg) in the bucket at once but it was really hard going. With so much in there plus the water to clean it it was quite difficult to get it clean. The next bag I decided to split which made life much easier, I found that the first 2-3 batches of water I added were quite bubbly and had lots of floating bits while after that it got a lot cleaner. I was adding the water and then using my hand to create a whirlpool effect in the bucket. It meant that pretty much all the sand was suspended in the water and then when I stopped and left it for 30 seconds only the sand dropped to the bottom making it fairly easy to tip out the junk.

Hope I don't have to do that again any time soon though!

As FM said, it will all end up at the bottom.

Stab a few hundred holes in the bag with a fork, and slit a hole big enough to slip a hose into the top. Stand it in a bucket, and push the hose in the hole, and leave it for a few hours. Any sand that makes it out of the holes will land in the bottom of the bucket.

I've got to say though, having done a four foot with play sand, its really light. I've now capped it with a bag of the more expensive :FS aquaarium sand as its a more course grade and doesnt get blown about by the powerhead.

Had the same problem with mine mate, Put Gravel in last friday........Then took it all out Monday and replaced with Argos Playsand !!! Only just settled yesterday...THANKFULLY !!!!
