if i put play sand in my tank would i have to put anything else in under the sand for live plants are would just sand be ok for it ????
as this is my first time using sand as i think you could tell

Anything you put under the sand would eventually make it's way to the top as the sand will filter through the more coarse material. Sand alone is fine for plants though I have it in 2 of my 3 tanks.

As said, sand is fine but use only sand :) theres been alot of talk also about using play sand and it was deterined that it is safe and appropriate :)

just stick to root tabs and you should be fine.

Umm . . . root tab  I am not quite sure what this is. I have play sand as well. I have put in some moneywort and water wisteria but they haven't been in there very long though (at least they don't appear dead yet).

Root tabs are a way of feeding your plants. I'm using Flourish brand.

You can put something underneath to feed your plants. There are enough substrates around that will provide nutrients to your plants. Other options are using liquid fertilizer which you simply put in the water, and for some root feeders like Sagittaria, Amazon swords and the like, you can use root tabs. These are fertiliser tablets that you put into the sand and slowly dissolve.

For more info, I suggest you search the planted tanks section.
