Hello all

I bought some play sand from home depot and rinsed it best I could and have the tank all setup and the filter has been running for about 9 hours now and th water is still cloudy, I can see the pants in the backround that I have in there but it is still cloudy, is this normal when you setup a tank with play sand as a substrate??

Thanks
Gregg

I just used that same sand on Monday. I had washed it really well in a buckey until it was clear. It's been 6 days and my tank is still some what cloudy.

I used play sand and no matter how hard I stir up my sand the water clears completely in around 10 seconds. I wonder why. I put a 1 inch layer of sand in the bottom of a 5 gallon tank and filled it up stirring the sand as much as I could. When the tank was full I counted to 4 and dumped out almost all the water leaving only the heaviest sand in the bottom of the tank. I repeated this 6-7 times with each 1 inch layer and then filled the tank stirred the sand and counted. If the sand didn't settle completely in 10 seconds I repeated the process until it did. It worked great. =)

Mine settled down within 24-48 hours. It's normal, don't worry about it.

I think we probably spent more time rinsing the sand than most would. Not everyone is entertained by rinsing sand for and hour and a half! ;)

oh come on it wasn't that bad. Atleast it was warm that day. I'm putting sand in brits tank and I just finished rinsing it. You shoulda been there for that. all purpose sand play sand and pea gravel blended together takes a lot more time to rinse than play sand does and the tank is 3 times the size!!! fun fun.

I'm with valleyrich. I rinsed mine for hours. Mine settled in 30 minutes (same sand). Don't worry though, it'll settle eventually.

Mine went from this...
