Would playsand be suitable for plants? I read it is to fine but i have no idea. I was thinking of converting to sand from gravel or to a really fine dark gravel if anyone knows where i can get some cheap. Cheers.

I've got play sand in my planted tropical tank. Only root plants I have are Elodea Densa, Amazon sword, Cabomba and Vallis and they are all ok at the moment!

play sand is fine for plants. i have had much better results with play sand than large grain gravel which i had before. :good: and i think it looks better as well.

It does look alot better, very nice tank simon. Going to buy some next week after my holiday, how many bags of 15kg will i need for a Fluval roma 125? Thanks again for your replies.

£2.99 for 15kg will be great then the girlfriend cant moan at me then haha. How much washing will be needed?

Cheers. Gaz

The way I did it was...

put some in a bucket, get a strong hose and spray it until it settles quickly. I did it a fair few times for each bucket and it settled really quick in the tank :good: takes a while (you'd have to do it with any other substrate anyway..) but should result in nice quick settling sand :p I also had a bigger bucket to stick it all in so i didn't have to go from the outside to upstairs and into my tank everytime I washed a bucket of sand

Depends if you've got a spare filter. I don't wash it can't be bothered. I let a spare internal filter with floss inside remove the dust for me.
