When platys are in a tank with a different kind of fish, do they need another platy in the tank?

well Id say yes. Ive had some by them selves and they were always depressed, but when the second or third one came in they got happy and livley again.

Theyre always with together as well. I think that they are like the schooling livebearers.

What he said  you'd be lonely too if you spent your hole life by yoorslef

Hiya

Yes plattys are definately schooling fish. I'd recommend at least three or more.

Be mindful of the geners you have though. Once Plattys have settled into their environment they will reproduce like wildfire and before you know it you'll be over-run with babies!

Also even if you have all females, they can save the sperm inside them for months and suddenly give birth as if by magic (this happened to me a few weeks ago - I have all females) and once they start giving birth it is possible that they will continue to do so monthly for up to 5 months!

If this happens, be sure to get a fry net and seperate the fry from the adults as they will more than likely be eaten!

Sorry if you already know some of this. I dont mean to sound patronising, I just want to make sure you know all the facts!

Hope this helps.

I just had two platy die of ich. I am currently treating my tank for it so the poor male is all alone as I cannot add anyone until the treatment is over. However, he spends a great deal of time with his cousin, "Flo". Remember in Finding Nemo, one of the fish called her reflection her cousin Flo, so I call all of their reflections Flo. :p

I find that my zebra danios terrorize my platys. My tank is still fairly new and hence somehow picked up ich. I am wondering if the platys are the cause due to how stressed they get from the danios constantly picking on them.

Has anyone else had a problems with their platys getting picked on?

I dunno if they are actually schoaling species but I do noticed too that when they are alone, they are quiet and not very visible. As soon as you have more than one, they become more active. If you have only females, I find that they don't cause much aggression. In fact, I also had only 3 males in the same tank, and that was fine too...
