I just got my first platys and I’m looking for tips.

1. Any care tips that may help
2. How to sex them. I was told they were all male however two are getting suspiciously fat……..

Give us more info. How large is your tank? How often do you do partial water changes? How long has the tank been running? How are you set up?

Of course!

I have 4 platys currently in a 10 gallon (due to some unfortunately bad advice from a fish ‘expert’ at my local fish store) They will be upgraded soon, likely to a 20+ gallon within the next month or so. I also plan to add at least 2 more as I’ve read they like bigger groups.

They were my first non ‘traditional’ fish (ex: goldfish/bettas) so I have made some mistakes in the past month since I got them.

I do partial water changes around every week.

The tank has been running for a month, is planted and has driftwood, though I’m looking to add more hides. I keep it around 78 and the water hardness is around 120ppm.

I’m currently worried about the tank being overstocked. Which is mostly why I want to make sure they were sexed properly.

Set google to images and type in "platy gonopodium" . Yes, you may look like a sketchy person if someone checks your history, but the gonopodium is the modified fin of a male platy.
