Well one of my platy's sits under the plant all day and then in the evening she spasms towards the surface but seems to miss the food no water stats I am affraid and no visual signs of illness but a little thin.

Without water stats its hard to say, this may be better off in the emergencies section as the people there are a little better tuned in to the subtle illnesses.

ok... first things..... water stats would be very helpful... so if you dont have a test kit, buy an API master test kit, considered a very good kit and do all the tests in it (pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate).

What are the other fish stockings? Sounds like if it is hiding, then it is afraid of some of the other fish. Does your avatar of a tiger barb indicate you have a school of them in the tank? They can gang up on other fish and pick on them...

If the fish is struggling to swim and catch food... then I would say it is injured from being picked on or has an illness. If you can get a picture of the little guy, that would also help out!

There are two males in a 10 gallon tank all by them selves as I had no where to put them they are the pair that I rescued

The tank has no live plants could this be my problem.

The Tiger barbs have there own tank

Well the tank stats are the most important thing now that we know its not bullying. A picture of the fish in question would again also be helpful.

Live plants are by no means necessary in any tropical tank. Many aquarists keep there tank simple with no plants or your basic plastic or fabric plants. But, plants will use some of the phosphates and nitrates in the water to help keep algae blooms down... but that hardly makes them necessary
