Hi,
I'm trying to find out what the specific gravity of the water in platies natural enviroment is. Everything I read says that platies come from brackish water in nature, but what would the specific gravity of "brackish" water be. I add one level tablespoon of marine sea salt (instant ocean) for every five gallons of tap water for my platies. The specific gravity of that water reads around 1.000 - 1.001. That dosent seem like it would qualify as brackish to me. Wouldn't brackish water be like at least 1.004 up to like 1.008 or 1.009?
My platies are doing well with the water they have but for some reason I kinda want to make their water saltier. Does anyone know how much salt platies can tolerate? Like could platies live in water with a specific gravity of 1.012 if I raised the specific gravity reeeally slowly over several months? Could they live in my saltwater tank (1.020) is I raised them up slowly over like 6 months? At what point (in terms of specific gravity) would platies start to suffer? Not that I want to do that, I'm just wondering.
oh, btw, is this the right forum to post this question? I've never used this site and this is the only forum I could find about platies. Anyone know any other forum websites about live-beares/platies?
