i bought 5 platies 2 days ago and i'm now entranced by their movements and behaviour - but when i turn the light off they immediately began to start nibbling at the ground ( i'd just fed them) i thought they stayed at the surface??? are mine normal/ok?

No not at all, they will go anywhere in the tank not just the top, i wouldn't worry about it.

My swordies (closely related to platys) mainly stay around the upper middle of the tank, but hang at the bottom sometimes....almost touching the gravel...and sometimes they're at the top. They enjoy all levels from what I've seen. Livebearers are great overall fish.

Plaies are omnivorous non-stop nibblers, so they're going to be hanging out anywhere they can find that offers nibbling opportunities.
