I have several platy fish in my tank and forever breeding (I give them away to friends if any survive!) but I was wondering is there a ruling regarding 'inter breeding'?

Reason I ask is, I have a blue male platy with spots, what seems like his offspring that survived in the tank from birth, a female blue with spots (identical markings to him). Now she has grown up he is is forever chasing her wanting to mate but I would love to keep her as she is stunning colours.

Is there a general ruling with inter breeding, anyone provide any advice please.

Many thanks (I have to pop out for a while, so apologies if I dont get time to reply back to any responses tonight)

Ohhh brilliant!! Im so pleased I can keep her, now im smiling.

So the general rule is they can inter breed as much as they wish just not with the deformed fish, excellent knowledge I have learned.

Thanks for your help

You will have a 3 eyed platy lol

ha ha!! Very funny!!

I asked the same question at my trusted lfs last week as my female had 14 babies before xmas. They're now 2 months old and starting to decide on their sex. I have a new male platy as their father died of dropsy before they were born but their mother is still in the tank.
I was told it would be fine to keep my females as my existing male isn't related but if I allow brothers and sister to mate or to mate with their mother I could end up with poorly fry with spinal problems and generally weak fish.

This I don't want so I am giving the lfs all the male babies and possibly some of the females if there turns out to be too many.

It may be something you want to consider but ultimately it is up to you

Best wishes

Here is a thread about a recently discussed topic, about inbreeding guppies if you'd like to take a look :good:

Inbreeding continually imo will eventually weaken the gene pool & you will get weakened & or deformed fish.
Sometimes inbreeding is done to improve a desirable aspect, but it shouldn't be done over & over

If you remove any defective fry, inbreeding is the way to improve a line. If you do not remove defectives, :good:

either way I'm not going to allow mine to interbreed. It just doesn't feel right as I want the healthiest, happiest fish I can have. I know it would happen in the wild but they're not in the wild. They are in my home and I'm responsable for their wellbeing.

Just my thoughts :)

That's what I said fishy friend, it can improve a line, but to then carry on inbreeding generation after generation will eventually weaken the gene pool
Btw most of my breeding experience is with dogs where inbreeding & line breeding is often done, but only from the best parents, not indiscriminately

i have guppy's that have been in breed for 20 years and still going strong

Sorry for the delay replying but thanks to you all for your comments, much appreciated.

Im in two minds now whether to keep her or give her to some other lucky person!! She is a stunning looking fish, but the most important thing I have to consider is the fishes health and well being.

If I did keep her my intention would'nt be to breed her, it would only be if the odd one survived in the tank (rarely happens I must admit but you do get one pop up occassionaly).

Well many thanks again and I will take on board all your advice.
