hi, i have had my female sunset platy for ages and today i decided to buy a male platy. when i got home i put him in the community tank and the two of them began chasing one another around the tank, often stopping to have a little nip at each other. now they have stopped this. do they do it to see whoes boss or to see what the others gender is?
thankfully they are ok with each other and seem to be getting on!

you should really get another female, hey should be at a male to female ratio of 1:2. They might have just been tired or something, but it might happen again.

this is common when introducing new platy, male or female, its a form of saying hello really. platy are one fish that has no problem with introducing itself, unlike most fish they dont tend to head for cover as soon as being let out. they would have sussed eachother out whilst he was still in the bag, if it was clear ofcourse. dont be surprised if the first part of their meeting has resulted in your female becoming pregnant.

i did keep a male and female platy together for like a year and they didnt have any problems. and i didnt mind the fry, i just let them be eaten by the other fish.yes i know..its a shame!
but about 2 months ago the male dissapeared, have no idea what happened to him! but i got another female today and all seems fine!

Wow, that's weird that your male just dispaeared like that! I had one of my males dissapear the first day I had them but thankfully he was only hiding in the rocks:p
