Hi, I discovered one of my female platy's was giving birth the other day, unfortunatley they are in a community tank and so were readily eaten by my boesemani rainbows and tiger barbs. I rushed out to get a breeding trap but the moment I put the old girl in there she stopped giving birth, I guess she was stressed!
Any tipps on how to make her more comfortable?

Just some advice, next time she appears to be pregnant put her in the breeding trap maybe 2-3 days before you think she is going to drop! If you need help telling when she is going to drop, then you can always post her!

Now for the help now, you can always let her back into the tank and then raise the temp and i think adding a little bit of salt might help decrease her stress level!

Hope i was of some help!

Thanks!

Thanks Dean, I think that said platy has finished birthing for now, but after reading the pinned topics on this subject I realise that my other female is almost at bursting point. So i will get her in the trap and see how she goes. If all goes well i will try and get some pics up :good:

Breeding traps will always be stressful on them. Stress can cause them to abort, have birthing difficulties, or even die. So, essentially, anytime you use one you are risking those things. If you still want to use them, only keep the mother in there for 2-3 days max. After that, you have to take her out and it's going to be incredibly stressful to put her back in there. Breeding traps also don't provide very much room for the fry, so they are good for a week to 2 weeks. I'd look into a seperate breeding tank if you're serious about this. :)

I do have a spare tank in the attic, my girlfriend would have killed me if i suggested that I should set it up (she thinks two is enough, huh!), but now my other platy has given birth and my girlfriend has seen the fry and has fallen in love with them maybe she will change her mind
