Platy with weird tail

I have a male platy that got a chunk taken out of his tail by another male platy (the affected fish was chasing the WRONG girl ).....this was just over a week ago. I immediately put him into the quar tank with 2tbsp/10 aquarium salt.

Now, it seems to start healing and looking good then looks worse, then looks good....make sense? I tlooks like nearly completely healed then looks weird again.

I was reading another thread about the swordy that was given salt baths. Would it be possible to do this with my platy? I am avoiding using meds at this stage as I am firstly unsure if its bacterial or fungal (he is a red plagty)...and I also don't like using meds unless absolutely necessary!!!

EDIT....he is otherwise normal....eating normal....active etc.

Salt bath might help, try some melafix in the tank, if that dosn't work you might need to treat with anti internal bacteria med, good luck.
