I've had this problem with several of my mollies back when I had them, and now I am seeing them with my platys.
The back part of the fish becomes stretched out and the back fin get stiff, and in later stages start to clamp and bend at a 45 degree angle. Evetually the back fins start bending at almost a 90 degree angle, at which point death is not too far away.
One of my platys has been showing these symptoms for several days now, and I'm at a loss of what to do. I have no idea what causes this...my water parameters are fine: 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia...as for nitrate, it's supposidly 20ppm, which is what my tap water reads at. My pH also reads 8.0 both in my tap and in my tank, even though the city says it should read 7.0...no idea how to explain that discrepancy.
Right now I have her in a breeder net so that she isn't bothered by the other fish and doesn't have to use so much energy swimming. This fish is partially translucent and I don't see anything abnormal inside her, and I certainly don't see any extermal parasites. She usually eats in the morning, but doesn't seem interested in eating at any other time of the day. Mostly she hangs out by the surface. She is more active in the morning. Other fish seem fine right now.
So far the only thing I've done is raise the temperature (83 degrees), but that hasn't seemed to help any. I was in the hospital myself with a kidney infection, so I haven't been able to observe her as much as usual. The only new addition to the tank was a light and new glass top; previously I had no light and a marble top. The light has only ever been on for 3 hours during the evening.
What do I do? My husband and I are going to do another water change tomorrow when I'm feeling better. I was thinking of just doing a 5%...should I do more? I have very little salt left in my water as I recently learned that my loach isn't supposed to like it.
