OK, so it looks like I'm going to be a proud parent soon. :D

I have a female variatus platy (X. variatus) that lived since she was a fry with some zebrafish. Six weeks ago I added 3 swordtails (X. helleri)- 1 male, 2 females. I was ready for the female swords to start having fry (one is already clearly pregnant). I knew the various Xiphophorus spp can crossbreed, but I didn't really think about it when I added the swords.

My question is, what will the fry end up looking like? More like their platy mother, or their swordtail dad? Will the males have swords? Or some mix of the two?

Anyway, I'm glad my platy is having babies- she's a pretty fish, a nice uniform deep red, and a nice, gregarious personality.

the babies will be longer than a platy but shorter than a swordtail. SOme of the males will have sword filaments on their tails, others won't. Their colour will be similar to the parents and a mixture of the parents.

LOL your have a mixed bag of stuff as platies and swords have been crossed many times.

It all depends hoe true the original fish u have.

If the have been crossed with something with in 3-4 generation ago then that may have a stronger look to the fry, as either fish could be more geneticaly platy but look sword or visa versa.

It's far from easy to say though, so let us know.
