Hi guys,

I've just bought 5 platies from my LFS today: 2 male and 3 female. I have a couple of questions:

1. Firstly, One of my females is a lot fatter than the other 2 and has a dark grey spot where a gravid spot would usually be. Does the gravid spot show through on both sides of the fish, or is it just her markings?

2. One of my males is staying at the back of the tank, down the bottom. He's not laying on the substrate but he is hovering above it, occasionally hiding behind the wood. Is this normal for new livebearers to do this?

Thanks in advance ;)

not sure on the grey spot, but its likely that the female is pregnant.

how long have they been in the tank? you really need to wait at least 48hours until they have had time to settle into their new tank, if the fish is still acting strange then you may need to look at other things, IMO he was probably just stressed due to travelling and changing tanks.

Thanks in advance ;)

Thanks very much. I'll have to research on the gravid spot, see if it does show through. They have only been in the tank a couple of hours, 4 to be exact. I'll definately have to wait and see when he settles in properly, its just my other platies are doing fine, and he's the smallest.

Gravid spots on all my plattys are really clear like a dark greay area so i imagine she will be pregnant watch out for the squareing off when she becomes square shaped this is when the drop is ready to arrvie you will notice her stomach go from a round shape to a almost square. Make sure you watch for this cause one evening i was saying to my girlfriend do you think this platty is particularly square now and ready and we both agreed maybe another day or two, next morning she was giving birth in the tank missed the drop and lost most of the fry.

Thanks. I really do hope she is pregnant...

I'm not gonna move the fry to another tank, I want it to be as natural as possible, and to see how many fry I actually get. If I dont get many, I may consider putting up another tank.

I have actually just realised that the platy that is not very confident is a female, not male.
