Hi, seeing as that I am new to the hobby, I have my tank stocked with 3 female Platy and 1 male. The females are always out and about swimming but the male either hides in the plants or in the whiskey barrel I have and rarely comes out. Does anyone have any input on what could be causing this?

My water parameters are as follows:
pH: 7.2
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate 5
Temp: 75

How long have the fish been in the tank? The females may be picking on him a little to get him to leave them alone. How big is you tank? It may benefit to add another male and female if you have the room.

The male and the female have been in 2 weeks and I added two other females to the tank over the weekend. I have a 20 gallon tank. I was also thinking along those lines but I wanted to get opinions from some one who has done this longer than me. Thanks for the response!

That will give more female to male ratio still but givehim one of his own too. The males will chase each other away from the females at tim s but not as likely with more females available.
