heyaa,

right i have a male and female platy however im not sure what is going on,

they seem fine together however the male sometimes starts chasing her a little, not around the tank but sort of chasing her around, however he doesnt seem to be chasing her like a guppy would chase a female, hes just running after her every now and again, its kindoff un explainable. whats this? could it be being dominant, and it doesnt appear to be like he wants to breed with her, and it doesnt seem to be nipping. its strange.

aslo my female looks like a male. but im sure shes not. is it possible that she could be turning into a he? i now guppys can but can platys?
or can some just look like males? she looks like she has male parts however the males are totaly different.

cnt get a pic cos 'shes' so fast but when i got her she was definatly female no doubt. hmm

you could have a young male that is being bullied by the bigger male. Alternatively you have a pregnant female and the male wants to breed but is put off by her being pregnant.
If you can post a picture of the fish we can have a go at sexing them for you.

I agree with Colin T.

Also, my male never really seems to actively chase my females around the tank, and yet I'm fairly sure 2 of them are pregnant.
Pics would help.

Just one male and just one female?
Hmmmmm.
That could be problematic, only because the male could stress the female out trying to mate.

yes, i no, i only had enough cash on me at the time to get one female and one male. when i get back from my hols next week ill try and get some cash to get some more fish, i want two more honeys and a platy, but might take some time atm, with two fish dieing unknowingly in the last 3 weeks im not adding any new fish, and plus ill be saving up from the holiday next week.

update: right i went to take pictures but canot find any adapter to make it come on the laptop, but i think its a male. can they turn sex? i no guppies can but can platys? because she was definatly a she when i got her, just looked like she had a bit of a point, but now its definatly a point lol its even 'moving' (im not going to describe that lol)

grrr and i thought i may have some little platys soon :( damn! lol so is it probably just the bigger male showing him whos boss?

can platys change sex? :/

you can try trading him in for a female HEHE. i use this rule... 3 females to 1 male :p

yep, i know 1 male to two females is the right ratio for platys but im sure the two boys can be single as i dont have the room for 6 platys in my tank lol x :p but atleast now its shortens the amount i need to save up, i only need 2 honey gouramis now :p

can platys change sex? :/
most livebearers can so I guess platies can too. However, I haven't had a platy change from female to male so they might be the odd one out. But since mollies, swordtails and guppies can, I reckon platies can too.

if you go to the following link

http://www.perthaquarium.com.au/fish/tropi...ater_fish.phtml

and scroll down to the bottom right of the page, there is a link called "Mollies, Swords, Guppies & Platies". Click on the link (picture or words) and a new window should open with some info on sexing livebearers.

that website is great btw :D

i have some platies all females, and a few weeks later one platy became male just like that, i wonder if it has anything to do with the female ratio in the tank LOL.

female livebearers will sometimes change into males if there aren't any males around. It is usually one dominant female that becomes male and breed with the remaining females. The other possibility is you had a young male (young fish all have a similar shaped anal fin) and as it matured its anal fin developed into a gonopodium.
