Hey guys, I'm helping a friend get started with fishkeeping and was going to suggest Platys as a good fish to start with. I did want to find out if they are happy living in pairs or if they prefer lots of themselves around. Thanks!
Pairs would be okay if it is just females. If you want males and females, you need at least 2 females to each one male. And groups of Platies...A big group of girls would be nice, otherwise you need the same stocking...2-3 females per male, just on a bigger scale.
Go for a big group if you can. I now plan to have a tank for platties and endlers. I had the misfortune of my girl getting stressed out (in post not far below) due to the only other platty being a male. At the moment she has a 55g all to herself. Although still not vigerous about eating etc and hiding alont, she is happier. I suspect fry on the way or currently being aborted. Won't know for sure for a few days anyway. She'll stay there until a smaller tank is cycled and ready for her and her new friends.
Hugs,
P.
