Hi i have 2 platys in my tank one is quite large and is a female but i can be sure on this one here he/she also pesters the other female can anyone tell what it is from this picture i was told by the pet shop it was a female
The orange fish actually looks more like a female molly to me, the rest of the fish in the pic are guppys (the black tuxedo one is a male, the other two look like females) .
Wow, you must have great eyes... I can't tell the sex with that pic myself (because it maybe the angle), but I do agree the orange one looks like a molly.
You can tell from the shape of the anal fin; it is the same with the guppies. The black guppy is a male and has a gonopodium (a stick shaped anal fin); the guppy in the centre of the aquarium is a female and has a fan shaped anal fin like the platy.
Platies, Swordtails (both Xiphophorus), Guppies and Mollies (both Poecilia) all belong to the Poeciliidae family and can be sexed in the same way.
The main reason why i am more lead to believe its a molly and not a platy is that the fish has a longer body than what is usual in platys, but i could be mistaken.
I must admit it looks nothing like the other two platys and is a complete different body shape, i put it down to it not been fully devoloped and still young as it is smaller
