Sunset platy had 8 fry, possibly last night or the night before. We went away for the weekend so I left the lights off for two days, but when I came back fairly late that night I turned the light on to feed them, and frightened them, they were all apparently resting. I didn't notice the fry then, just fed them and turned the light back off quickly.

I have been suspecting she was preggers for ages. She seems to have lots more in her tummy as far as I can see. She is a bit transparent at the end of her belly and I can see some black dots within and ghost shapes. Are these more babies? I can't see a gravid spot but her gills are very red. She seems fairly agitated and restless, did I stop her having the full quota by frightening her, or will she do the rest tonight if i leave the lights off again for a while?

I thought the silver balloon Molly was the pregnant one. She gets fatter by the day... :fun:

Awww, congrats! She probably has more Babies in her, if she only had 8 so far. So that's probably what you saw.

The red gills are a little bothersome...she may have gill flukes, or something. Is she breathing heavily, or flicking or rubbing against anything?

And you may have stopped her from giving birth when you startled her, but she should keep having the rest of the batch later once she calms down. It can take a up to a week to have all the fry, so be patient! :)

Well she is certainly acting a little barmy, but then wouldn't you if you had to give birth to that many babies? I shall look up the gill fluke thing. Thank you. If I don't find anything i will post a pic if I can. How many will she have? She only had one last time and she ate that eventually after I had fallen in love with him.

She can have up to 80, but that's not very common. Usually more around 15-30, but it depends on the age, and size of the female.
