Hi guys,

I have a question. The reason I'm posting in this forum is because I'm not sure whether or not I need to save my other fishies.

I have 5 neon tetra ('jumbo' in the store - i.e. old I think, certainly not cardinal), and they've happily had a 30L tank to themselves for months.

Now the other day, I bought two platies to join them. They seemed alright, got reasonably settled, and I've seen no signs of disease, though in retrospect I know I should have quarantined the fish and wish I had, now. The only problem I seem to be having (before the new fishies arrived) is cloudy water, that does turn green after a while. Been trying to address it as an algae cloud, but keeping the light time to a minimum, doing regular changes and making sure I'm not overfeeding doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Anyway, tonight I got home to find that one of my platies had gotten stuck in a very small part of my castle decoration, and was dead. Obviously, I have sorted out the decoration, but my question is this: is a fish likely to die in one workday just through being stuck? Or is it more likely that Dr. Cox (sob) was ill, and I need to tend to the rest of my fish accordingly?

Thanks a lot,

Tracey

Need to look at your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
The tank was overstocked.
Cloudy water bacterial bloom, fitler not coping, over feeding, lack of maintanance.

I'll need to get my water tested.

Are you certain that the tank was overstocked? I did research that, and was even going to add in more fish based on general info and the community creator on ThinkFish. What would you recommend for a tank that size?

As I said, I have tried to address all the causes of the cloudiness that you mention but am having no joy. I must be doing something wrong. :( The filter seems to be fine from what I can see, and from what I've read it's ok for the size of the tank, I'm not overfeeding the fish, and I'm doing weekly 40% changes at the moment.

Take a smaple of your water to the lfs tell them to write the reading down for you.
Neon tetra need a mature tank of 6 months, they are a shoaling fish so need room to move nothing less than 10gal.
Livebearers are active fish and need the same 10gal.
Six gallon is not a big tank, ideal for inverbrates and a betta.

I think Mr. Cox was already on his way out, and went into the castle to hide.

I agree with Wilder. Platies are poo machines. Keep an eye on your other platy and neons.
