Hi all,

One of my female platys was looking quite pregnant earlier today... I popped out for a couple of hours and now she doesn't look pregnant any more... 🫣🙄

I know platys eat their fry, but would it be that quick?
Obviously they may be hiding, and there is ample hiding places in the tank. I guess time will tell.

Would you say she was pregnant in the first photo?

Excuse the bad photo and dirty glass, it's clean up day tomorrow.
Thanks all.

The females don't normally eat the young unless they are hungry. If you feed the adult fish 3 times a day, most of the young should be left alone, at least for long enough so you can get them out.

Have lots of floating plants like Water Sprite and the babies can hide in there.

Hello. Live bearing females can delay dropping the fry until they feel that their environment is just right for fry survival. Large, frequent water changes will help get the female ready. I've found that more frequent water changes and warmer water will encourage the female to drop her fry if she's debating. Feeding a bit more and a bit more often will keep the adult fish satisfied and they'll be less likely to see the fry as lunch. Here's an old school trick. Add a handful of standard aquarium salt to the replacement water. Salt is a stress reliever and can be helpful in easing the delivery process.

Thank you. I actually added some API stress coat yesterday and have done a 30% water change today. The platy mum is doing fine.

I have soon no sign of any fry but if any did survive, there is plenty of hiding places for them.
Hopefully next time I'll be able to get them in a breeding box.
