We have 3 sunset wag platties, 1 red platty and a platy that wasn't named when we got them but we've researched and it looks like a tuxedo platy.

1-2 weeks ago I saw a sunset platty in a pot we have in our tank, which was unusual as they normally stay at the top of the tank. Recently (2 weeks ago) we discovered Cherry Barb babies about 3/4 weeks old. Around 3/4 days ago I noticed another baby, but tiny and I assumed it was the Cherry Barb's again. Today I saw two together and they were bigger, I was amazed as I was sure there was only one, but on closer inspection, they're fins are not like the Cherry Barbs, but in fact look most similar to a platy!

This is completely out of this world for me, we've never had babies survive more than a couple of days and now it is two lots in as many weeks! Those that are experienced with breeding platys, what's the best distinguishing sign to be completely sure it is a platy? They're about 5 or 6 days old I believe. They're just starting to get colour in them - one has a little flash of red, the other the same but a few black dots.

I just can't believe it! :hyper:

do you have any other livebearers in the tank that it could be? i myself have never seen egglayer fry so cannot tell you a difference, but livebearer fry would probably be bigger

The only livebearer we have apart from the platy is our swordtail, but that is a male. All three Sunset wags are females I think, because their fins are identical, but the tuxedo and red platty may be a male! One of our Sunset Wags looks to be getting bigger again, so may be the culprit.

I didn't really see the egglayer fry, they were already 2 weeks old when we noticed them as we'd had the kitchen done next to where are tank is and so didn't pay much attention!

I've given them bloodworms, but the two fry I've seen seem content with staying in the thick plants, so they may be safe.

yeah defo could be a mix swordtails and platies are very very closely related doubt very mutch their cherry barb fry as therd prob b eaten at egg stage by the parents

Not in our tank, as I said in my first post, we had 8 surviving Cherry Barb fry and now they're pretty much too big to be eaten! I've looked at them again and I'm 100% sure they are different shape to our Cherry Barb fry when we saw them at 2 / 3 weeks. I'm thinking it may be the Tuxedo Platy that was the male, because one has some dark black / blue spots - is it too soon to be making any judgements based on colour?

The platy fry haven't grown much in comparison in the last 4 days. Worried that due to them hiding their not getting enough food.

They're hiding place has been wrecked and I believe both have been eaten as they are nowhere to be seen. :(
