I got a Juwel Rio180 and I was just doing a 50ltr part water change. When I started to put nice clean fresh water in and as the level got to the filter box intake a platy fry swam out and started swimming up an down the box... anyhow I watched it go to the bottom and I have a mixture of gravel/pebbles which I had just disturbed at bottom of filter box. The fry had managed to squirm its way through and under the filter box.

Do I leave it a while to see if it comes out or just let it stay there and suffer until it dies?

Think I got a female platy not feeling to good atm aswell. She seems to swim about then hides/rests on gravel under/near plants.

hi wit
seems like your female is still in labour, try turning off the light for a few hrs,its less stressfull for mom,
if the fry went under your filter box it should be able to get out its natural for them to hide,
you could move some gravel away so it can get out,ive a vision 180 my platy fry hide under the filter all the time,i got one out of the filter top today,it had been sucked in you could check in their too.hope this helps
donna :D .

I'm not familiar with that kind of filter, but if it has any mechanical parts that the Platy could get hurt on, that's not going to be good. It's also going to be hard for it to eat in there. I'd take it out, myself. :)

Can you give anymore information on your female? Does she exhibit any other symptoms? What are your water parameters?

I spent about 30mins looking for my female before.... I even moved a couple of ornaments that the fish hide in sometimes... she came out on her own in the end, she was hiding in leaves on my fake hanging plastic plant. If she is not there she is down bottom hiding under real plant. She came out for food then vanished again. She is not looking pregnant anymore.

Water parameters are ok nitrite 0; amonia 0; nitrate 20ish, which is norm for this area.

Oh and no really dangerous parts in filter box and the fry went under the box but are in the tank.

hey wit,
did you find any new fry now she looks not to be pregnant anymore?,is she ok now,
hope every things ok anyway.donna :) .

Sadly she passed away yesterday(Friday) and it has upset the balance of the tank as one of the males is now being pushed out by the other 2 males. So I am going to get another 2 females later today to hopefully put things right and that will be 3 males and 9 females (lucky guys... 3 each).

There is another fry or 2 hiding in the filter box but they go right to the bottom when I try to get them and takes ages for them to come back to the top. Couple of the other females look like they are going to pop soon also.

hey wit
sorry to hear about your female platy, are the fry hiding in the top part of your filter?
mine were, 2 of them it took me ages to get em out,i did it with a small black fish net,as you know their is no room to cup em out.it may be easier to turn off the pump and take out the power head while you go fishing :) .,just a thought i have some live plants floting at the top of my tank every time my platys give birth the fry seem to be swimming in them, then all i do is cup them out and pop em in the breeding net i have.good luck with your new females.donna :) .
