Hi my platy has got some kind of problem i dont know what thought.
about 5 months ago i had a coral platy (male) and its fins (all) were like resting (not up and moving)
In other words its top fins were like stuck to its body and its tail fin is like clamped.
Could this be clamped fin?
Sadly this fish died. :-(
Well now i have a platy (sunshine female) With the same problem.
Can you help me please.
And i dont think fish die of clamped fins do they?
I hope you can find what is up with the fish.

Thanks alot.
James

James, in my experience, you're right that fish don't die of clamped fins. Instead, clamped fins are typically a sign that a fish is stressed or not feeling well. Is there a chance you could post results from ammonia/nitrite/nitrate tests? Are there any other signs of illness other than the clamped fins?

Some months ago, every now and then some of my platies would clamp their fins. This usually was a sign that my water quality was not the best, and they would perk up after a water change. Also, I wonder if your Red Tailed Black Shark has been behaving aggressively towards any of your other fish? This could be another reason for fish stress.

Jimmy, I am not the most experienced fishgeek, however will offer advice if I can.

Clamped fins is/are normally a symptom of something else, it is not normally a "disease" in itself. e.g. one of my Mollys was looking poorly last week and her fins were clamped or really just pulled into her body, on close inspection she had a little white-spot over her here and there. Treatment is underway and she is fine.

Do you have any test readings from your water?

Have there been any changes recently with the tank/water etc?

Good luck.....

Yes the red tailed shark has bieng behaving aggressivly.
i am sorry i dont have test kits (yet) I will be getting a full set for xmas.
In a few minuits i will be putting a fluval 3 (with carbon) and doing a 1.5 gallon water change.
There is no other platy or fish like this though.
I hope the fish will live she has just had fry.
Could this be why the fish may be a bit stressed?

Thank you very much.

James

I think you may be right that she could be stressed shortly after giving birth. A water change is a good idea :). How big is the tank? I saw that you said it was 30 inches long, but how many gallons is it? I'm a bit concerned that a red tailed shark might be a little too much fish for a small tank, especially if it's bullying your other fish.
