I got a male sunburst platy about 2 weeks ago, he had a "deformed" fin that looked like it may have been eaten away by fin rot at some point, and he rarely ever used it, other then that he was a perfectly healthy fish. But today while I was cleaning out by betta bowls which were next to my 10g I saw that the male platy had a very stringy poop and was looking a bit lethargic, I told myself I'd look at him more closely later and continued to clean the betta bowls. About 10 min later I looked back in the tank and there was the male platy lying on the bottom, not moving. I poked him gently and realized he was dead. Taking a closer look at him I couldn't find anything wrong with him. He had been swimming around and eating just this morning. I don't know what could have killed him, I'm currently treating my tank with Maracyn - Two because I had a fish die last week due to septecemia. But the platy never had any contact with that fish, and was moved into this 10g from my other 10g when that fish died. And Ideas on what coud have killed him would be great. I currently have a female platy pregnant with his babies (due in about 3 weeks) so his memory will live on. But please any suggestions would be great!!!

:rip: Skeeter... You'll be missed

id put that down to consipation. the stringy poop is a sure sign. did the fish look bloated at all? what we must always remember with captive live-bearers especially platy and guppy is that these guys are a genetic mess. the inbreeding is said be astonishing. they can just die with no noticable reason. internal parasites kill slowley you'd notice something wrong with the fish weeks before it died.

I just had the same problem!

Only two days ago did I see my one of my female Platies with some of it's fin missing. Unusually, it had a strange white spot on the end of it's fin.

The next morning, the white spot was smaller and the fin was bigger ( It was healing obviously. )

When I finally got back from school, I couldn't find her with the others. I looked for ages and finally found her, lifeless, down the side of my plant. I moved the plant and let her float to the top, only to find her fin fully healed, yet she was dead! :-(

Any ideas of what could have happened?
