I have a yellow platy with black tipped fins on the sides of the back fin. I don't think this matters but just for reference. Well, she started hanging in the bottom of our 35 gallon tank so I moved her to a netted I closure inside the tank after noticing 2 fry in the plants. Used a turkey baster to put them in the enclosure as well. Lol sorry but I couldn't catch them in the net! Anywho, they are doing well and growing fast. This was about 3 days ago. Today I looked and there's 15-20? They are much smaller and I can't see them well except for their beady ill eyes! So I couldn't get a good count. My question is.........how do I know she's done having the wee ones? When do I move her out before she eats them! And what exactly do I feed the fry? I have been grinding flakes in my hand super tiny and they seem to be fine. But just need advice it's out first babies! Thanks in advance for any advice, criticism or comments!!! I'm so excited!

Thanks for reading!

if its been more than 24 hours, she probably is done, but leave her in for another 8-12 hours.

This morning I checked her and she has a reb bubble looking think like pro lapsing from her grave spot? I think that's what it's called. Where she has the babies. Is this something to be concerned about??

I would move her out of the breeding net, she will start eating the babies any time!

About the prolapse, my platy females never had that. But I did lose one female after she gave birth. It is not uncommon!

Moved her. They seem to be all there. There's a gob of them! I'll be so sad if she dies! Thanks so much!

If you can, see if you can separate the male away from her to give her a chance to recuperate. Male livebearers are constantly pestering their females, and that would put a lot of stress an her.

For the next few days she may be hiding herself, but most likely come out at feeding time! Keep things calm for her! :good:

It is very important for a good growth in your fry to keep your water pristine. The finely ground fish flakes are fine for their food and check for fry that are not moving, a few losses are pretty much unavoidable.

congrats on your new babies :good:

My water is great I had it tested last week. I moved her out and we bought her pregnant. There is no male plays in there. Just females. So that's good. And she's hiding and coming out now an d again. Thanks for all the advice. So far all babies are alive. Hard to get a count tho! Thanks again I'll post pics as they get a ill bigger!!
