My platys i got were pregnant and introduced velvet to my community tank (took a while to diagnose properly )
One of the females gave birth 2 days after i got her , the other female was very large with a large dark gravid spot she has since contracted - what i know now is velvet , she lost weight got swollen inflamed gills and eventually the velvet on her .
She has lost a great deal of weight over the past 4 days and her gravid spot has got lighter , i didn't know she was going to give birth as she has shrunk so much , luckily i put her in the net cos she was having dificulty swimming and laying on the floor on her side panting so i thought i'd give her a break from the others .
She was in the net for about 6 hours and then started to give birth - the thing is she only gave birth to 4 fry and they are very tiny , really thin and see through they were pretty weak but are better today after having a good feed of spirulina in the fry tank , i let mum have a good feed and rest and she went back in the tank this morning and is acting nearlly normal again .
The tank was treated tuesday .

Do you think because she was so ill she absorbed some of the babies ????

hopefully makes sense sorry if it dont

i think she gave birth already before you put her on your trap...

it also happened to my molly...

my molly's gravid spot was getting smaller day by day for 3 days but i didin't see any fry on the tank...

she got also thinner and thinner...

let's wait for the other's comment about this...

thanks for the reply angel

anyone else got any comments :)

generally platys won't give birth for more than a couple of hours.

If she aborted there would have been 0 fry or at least a batch of dead fry.

If she is young her brood size would be very small anyway.

With the fish been stressed because of disease and eating poorly it is to be expected the fry are weak and smaller than usuall but it is however quite normal for platy fry to be see through for the fist week or so.

It is possible she gave birth to dead fry as well as a few living ones because of the velvet weakening all but the the very strong, in which case Twilight Angel's theory could mean that there are dead fry in the substrate, or if you used a large net then some fry (dead or not) could of fallen through the netting.

Another possibility is the mother ate some of the fry before you noticed - especially if she was in a net and not a breeding trap.

In reality it could be any of these and there is no way of knowing for sure.

thanks for the reply she's not doing well again at the moment she's laying on her side on the floor panting heavily will give her until tomorrow then might euthanise cos she's certainly not a happy fishy :(

is the velvet easing up or not?

What are you treating with?

is the velvet easing up or not?

What are you treating with?

i'm treating with interpet 7 (treatment added 8pm Tuesday) and temp upto 30 degrees and lights off most of the day
the rest of the fish are starting to respond well but poor jerri is just really quite ill i think she was infected internally really bad before the velvet came out on the other fish .

Still hoping though - fingers crossed

Cheers Sarah xxxx
