hi ,
i just got another male platy(my other 1 died, dont know why) and it seems to be swimming akwardly. it has its head pointing upwards and looks as if he's struggling
to swim higher,he is moving his fins rapidly but not moving much.
can any1 tell me whats wrong with him.

thanx in advance

Can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, what size tank, how many fish and which type, also is he flicking and rubbing on objects in the tank, does he have a swollen tummy, or scales sticking out like a pinecone, are gills red and infalmed or pale, just something to go on.

ammonia and nitrate levels are fine
pH is at 7.6
he shares a 15g tank (slightly planted , well filtered and heated at about 75f)with a few livebearers (same size) , a baby bala , 2 tetras,a goldfish,2 loaches and a small frog. i know it's overstocked.
the tank is covered and well lit.
all my other fish are fine , although a male platy died just yesterday of no apparent reason , it wasnt eating or mating.
this one seems to be happy it's eating but it has trouble swimming,if it stops moving its tail it starts to sink rather that float as if it were overweight
it has no external abnormalties

thanx for the reply

It can't be fine with goldfish in there, and a poor little bala shark, who recommened them fish in there, what loaches are they.

How big is the goldlfish, and what are you going to do with the bala shark.

my goldfish is my first fish i didnt know much when i started(bout a year ago)
and my baby bala is doing fine in the tank
i dont know which loaches i hav they been ther as long as the goldfish and i never hav trouble with them they are still small bout an inch.my biggest fish is the goldfish its bout 2.5-3 inches all my other fish are between 1and 2 inches.

everything is fine , i never had any disease outbreaks or unnatural deaths since i started. my water is crystal clear and all my fish are doing fine.

i'm planning on getting an 80g tank by the end of the month.not planning on more fish though :D

Sorry didn't see that, hope you do as you are going to need it.

the bala eats well dosnt fight and swims a lot never hides or acts as if its stressed.
i hav a hydor filter which is meant for a 25g aquarium its the one that hangs on the inside which also blows air.
dont worry about the bala i told you ill hav a much bigger tank my the end of the month.80g enough?

Can you actually post your water stats ammonia, nitrate and nitrite though instead of "they're fine"- what you may veiw as ok could actually have somthing amiss in it; low water stats doesn't always mean "healthy tank".
If your platy is finding difficulty in maintaining balance/staying upright in the water he probably has a swim bladder disorder; These can be caused by bad water quality, internal bacterial infections and constipation. To find what his swim bladder disorder is caused by will determine his chances of recovery and the chances of other fish getting it, so it is very important you let us know.
Also it is vital you find out what loachs you have as if they're sucking loachs/CAE's(chinese algae eaters) you will be in alot of trouble when they start getting big; they will kill and eat all your fish despite been algae eaters, they are a timebomb just waiting to go off.
I would also rehome the goldfish, as despite how large a tank you get him he will not do well with your other fish; they may seem fine during the day but his tank mates will start to stress him out at night.

ill probably move all my other fish to my new tank and leave the goldfish in my old one.
i have one sucking loach and 2 unknown ones . the cae is still very small and i am having a little trouble with it as it chases my preg swortail and platy, he is in my hospital tank at the moment , go to fish emergencies ,to find out why.
i will keep him in my old tank with the goldfish when i move the rest to my new one.
