i would like to try and breed plattys, i asked my lfs what they would buy if i breed fish, and they said plattys, i will be taking back my 2 firemouths and have a empty 40 gallon for them. how many should i get 1 male to 3 females?. if this would work

It's really easy. 2:1 females is okay too, assuming you are going to stock the tank with lots of Platies. You could get twenty Platies or so, fry aside. You have to have a plan for the fry. Do you have any plans for that or do you want some advice on that too? Feel free to keep asking questions.

they are easy to breed, but rearing the fry to a good sale size is far more difficualt

you need plenty of live foods and space.

i put 1 male and 2 vergin females in a tank, with in a few weeks, they both were pregant
in a 40 gallon, i suggest deviding half the tank off, and having a trio of male and females on one side, and another trio of the other side, or another livebearer, such as guppies or swordtails.
having plenty of breeding nets and traps will save the fry.lots of plants and hiding places.
in a 20 gallon side, even 3-4 femals to 1-2 male is good.
