Plattys Been Born (strange)

Witnessed my female platty giving birth today and managed to net up ten as i was a little late, my question is why did they come out in balls then seemed to wake up open out from the ball and then hide some of them seemed un fertilised aswell as she just had eggs come out of her as appose to fry, it was very strange as i thought livebearers would be able to swim as soon as they were born some of these seemed to come out with yoke sacks attached to them and not active from the off anyone else seen this before

They are pre-mature. Are they alive or dead? I have had that happen with a dalmation mollie. I poked the egss and they "hatched" and the babies lived. They abbies are "grown" inside the mom, inside of eggs.

They sprung to life there selves and seemed active and quite large it was just strange how they come out as a ball then opened up into the fry the egg ones were definately not big enough to be fry she just gobbled them up before i had chance to do anything thanks for the reply

Yeah got lots and lots of fry some at 4 weeks old now and the new ones not sure i can snap a pic of the new ones though as they still in hiding

I am not sure they were premature actually (although they may have been).

As I understand it, although both Goodeids and Poeciliids are livebearers, Goodeid foetus have an umbilacle cord type structure called a trophotaneia via which the mother nourishes the young (known as matrotrophy), Poeciliids however provide little nourishment, have no umbilicle type structures and basically the eggs retained in the mother (although this is a simplification).

When the fry are born, they kind of hatch. This is why they are curled up into a ball and unfurl immediately they are expelled.
