Two or three females to one male works well.

Platies and guppies are sociable, and the more you have, the happier they will be. But that said, you already have quite a few fish in a 10 gallon tank. So I'd be tempted to stick with just three platies and see how your water quality goes. There might even be an argument for forgetting about the platies and just getting a few more guppies of the same strain. Once you have a "colony" of a single strain of guppy, it's easier to sell your pure-born offspring to the local store or else share them with other hobbyists.

In theory yes, guppies and platies generally get along fine.

In a 10 gallon, you can't fit that many fish. Six guppies and three platies would be about right. If you want more "stuff" sometimes adding invertebrates such as shrimps makes a nice alternative. These tend to add a bit less load to the tank for any given size. Apple snails, crayfish, and other big invertebrates obviously need to be treated like big fish. But glass shrimps, Amano shrimps, and the like could be counted as guppies in terms of loading.

Cheers, Neale
