When we first set the tank up, added platties first (8 of them) stayed well out at the front, over time we have added some rummynose, corries and 4 mollies.

Since then the platties, stay well hidden in the plants, only coming out occasionally. Only reason we know they are still there is the amount of small fry keep appeaing in the tank (thanks lfs for taking them).

Could they be hiding from other pregnent fish (do they normally give them a wide birth?), or could they actually be intimitated by the other fish, suprised one femail molly occasionally quick chase, but otherwise none appear agressive.

How large is the tank? You may be talking about overcrowding. Also Platy are pretty docile by nature and they may be hiding away. If your tank is less than 30 gallons (113.5 litres), it's too small.
