Does anyone else have blue platies that seem to get stressed very easy compared to any other platy?

I got blue platies in both my tanks and they seem to get upset quite easy when I do water change/clean tank etc. All other platies are great and fine. I have one blue platy still hiding around rocks/plants since yesterdays water change... getting bit concerned for it now as its never been out of sorts for this long but my blue platies in 180 also seem to hide or stay hidden after I done a water change or had to do something to tank.

Water stats are ok apart from nitrite in 180 which i'm sorting out but blues seem ok in there today, just blue in other tank.

Sadly my blue platy has died in the last 20mins or so :-( No sign of any illness or blemishes :/ and all other fish in tank look ok and seem to be swimming about in there normal manner.

Will wait a few days before replacing blue platy just to make sure all is ok.

When you do a water changes, do you try do get the water as close as posible to the current temp in the tank?
What exactly are your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate stats in your tank/s plus how many gallons does your tank hold? What is your total fish stocking in your tanks and how long have the tanks been set up?

the tank with the platy death is a juwel rekord 60 and it has been running since May05 and the platy in there since about July. Nitrite 0, Ammonia 0, Nitrate 10/20ppm(mg/L) always like this. Yes I always get the water to the same temp or just 2 below what it should be. Longest tank has been without a water change since I had it is 2 weeks on about 2 occasions but water stats were ok for me to do this and I lost no fish.

Hmm...Was the platy pregnant by any chance? What are the genders of your platys?

The platy that died was male and my 2 mickeys' are both pregnant but he even stopped hassling them the last cupl of days. Only really started to hide after I did water change as normal.

All other fish seem ok and checked water stats again earlier and got same results 0, 0, 10/20.

Although this blue platy was male he was a lot bigger(not fat/fatter) than my other platies in both my tanks.
Could he of been a superplaty and water on this planet was just not good enough for him ?

I had 2x red tuxedo platies die for no apparent reason, my sunset wags seem alot hardier as they have been in since 3days after it was set up and they are still fine, my remaining tuxedo seems strong too though, so i guess certain ones may just be more suseptable

Although platys are not that inbred in comparsion to guppys, blue platys tend to be quite inbred at times and he may have just died of sudden death syndrome, which is a genetic thing from poor breeding and usually quite rare in adult fish, considering you have explored almost every other posibility for his death i would put it down to genetics- given that its very easy to blame genetics and the vast majority of things are not down to them, i can't really think of anything else at the mo...wait a minute....What was his poop like before death?? Was it white/stringy looking at all? How long did you have him? You say he wasn't fat and was just big, but was he skinny looking at all? How was his eating? When you did a water change, did you just pour all the water in there in one big go or carefully tip it in over a couple of minutes?

When i do water change I pour in about a medium jug full at a time let settle a few secs because they all come playing near any bubbles i create(if pour to quick) when pouring.
I wouldn't of said he was thin just seemed bigger than all other platies I got. Not sure about his poop but did stop feeding day before I did water change thats why I noticed he was hiding a little then went into total hiding after I did water change and was always near bottom or behind hanging plant I got along back of the tank near top.

He may have got stressed out by the water change, after you have added dechlorinator and adjusted the temp of your water you should tip it in very carefully/slowly as it can be a shock for the fish if they get a flush of fresh water over them all at once, i add my water by the bucket full and i usually spend at least 2minutes pouring each bucket in- for big fish water changes are hardly ever an issue, but the smaller the fish the more it is stressed by changes in temp and water quality so its best to take that bit of extra care when doing water changes  .
