got a 5 gal tank, water condition ok got about 4 platies in 2 female swordtails, 2 black mollies and cory and algae eater. We did a total water change the other day as it looked as if fish tank had been polluted. Mainly the platies were shimmering thro the water. Anyway they seemed a lot better after water change just been to check on them and one of the algae eaters was dead and the platies are shimmering thro the water or resting on bottom and have their fins clamped together. Mollies seem ok. Any ideas I think i will lose them all soon. I think the smaller platy is dead already.

wow and i thought I had too many fish in my tank LOL I have a 10 gallon with 5 platies and 1 zebra dannio for now, and I change the water almost every other day as it get's so dirty from them...I also think I read somewhere mollies and swordtails need at least 15 gal size to be happy/move around enough...good luck and hope they're still ok!

Trouble is we had these fish given to us or they were going to be thrown away...so they have been in this tank for about 9 months and been fine...we are just doing our best...

Did you use dechlorinator in the new water and do you have any test kits for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates?
I agree the tank is overstocked which wont be making things any easier, but lets just adress the main issues for now :) .
Does the tank have a filter in it as well? What temp is the tank do you know?
