Platies + Cae

are algae eaters the same as pleco's?? if they are i have 2 baby pleco's with my guppy fry and they are fine, and i also have older pleco's with 1 female platy and they get on fine.

But i'm not sure if pleco's are the same as algea eaters (although i call my pleco's algea eaters)lol

No - there different (although look similar). Algae Eaters can be very aggressive towards other fish espically as they mature. I was just wandering how much it will stress out platies as I don't want them to adort a pregnacy.

Chinese algae eaters are not the same as plecos; in fact, they are not even catfish, but belong to the cypriniformes. They can get nasty as they get older. Platies might be less at risk than some of the most slow-moving fish, like gouramis, or bottomdwellers like cories, but I would still see about moving that CAE out of the platy tank by the time it hits 4 inches or so.

ow ok thanx :)
Is it already in your tank?? if so its probably best you take it out ASAP if it seems as if its stressing your platys out.
If its not already in your tank and you was thinking of getting one, maybe do a little research on them and then deside weither your ready to get one. And if you are willing to take the risk of it stressing your other fish out.

Hope that helps. thanx

Chinese algae eaters/sucking loaches, not only become aggressive with age, but also grow to a full 10" in time and can, obviously at this size, eat small fish. As you say yourself, they are aggressive fish, keeping them with any peaceful community species should be avoided. Eventualy, not only will they 'stress' the platies, they'll eat them too.

The problem won't present itself immediately. You'll find dead fish turning up later on. I'd suggest getting rid of the CAE and rehoming it. They simply do not make good community fish and there's little point in risking this kind of mix. Or, if you like the CAE (I like them too BTW), then keep it alone. They are territorial and preffer being solitary. Keep in mind it'll need at least a 20 gallon if you want to keep it permanently.

I would love to keep it alone - however, I simply cannot afford to buy a 20Gallon tank (or any for that matter) for just one fish.

Hey I have a CAE, group of neon tetras, zebra dannios, and i had a pair of platys at first. everyone got along fine well the danniois would chase the tetras, platys ate all the food, neons tried to school together, and the CAE hid in the cave and would poke his head out when something was happening. the CAE was our favorite b/c he seemed so small and shy and always hid...anyway, one day he got huge and is probably about 3-4 inches now and I don't know if it's my water or if it is him after reading some of these posts, but first I found a mauled neon at the top of the tank, and by mauled, I mean it looked like it had been through the filter thing, which i doubt, b/c the plant is blockin enough of the hole that no fish could get sucked in....then as some ppl mentioned one day you'd wake up and a ton of fish woudl be dead...anyway my platy got prego and the dannio suddenly was chasin her which made me think she was close to brith and giving off the scent, so i moved her which may have saved her, b/c next day, I come home from work, my male platy is dead, my zebra's body was all f'ed up and two neons were dead...Again I need to get a water test tomorrow so maybe the water was bad, but after reading some of these i don't know....mayb ethe CAE did it, but if he does attack the other fish, it's when i'm not here as i've never seen him do more than hide in the cave, suck on the wall and swim in the current of the incoming water. I like mine too and obviously don't want to get rid of him, but if my platys die again, and it's not my bad water skills, then i might need to get a sepa tank for it :(
