Hi,

I have 10 platy juveniles, one is 9 months and the rest are 6 months. They are in a 12g tank with a built in filter. They are cleaned once a week and at the moment all the water parameters are normal or within range. They are fed twice a day.

About a month ago I noticed that 1 juvenile was looking abit thin and was constantly resting on the leaves. I watched it over a couple of days and it was not being bullied and was eating well. It showed no outwards signs of being ill but within a week it had died. Shortly after a second died the same way. I treated the whole tank with myxazin.

I am now down to the 10 and have noticed that once again one is extremely thin. Again she is eating well and not being bullied. The only difference is that her finns do seem abit ragged. I separated her and I have treated for fin rot but there is no improvement. Also on looking today another is beginning to show signs of losing weight although with no other problems. I only have one hospital tank and if the whole tank is infected there seems little point of separating them now.

It has been suggested to me that it could be turburculous!!!! I have read up a bit on this and certainly losing weight is a sign but also it says that the fish should be distroyed.

Help me please I don't want my babies to suffer.

Looking at fish tb to internal parasites.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
Is the anus of the fish enlarged or red and inflamed.
Do any of the fish have bent spines.

Are there gills red? and do they seem to segrigate them selfs from the rest of the fish?

Sounds like it it could be gill flukes,

Hi,

Thanks for help.

Well I have watched them again this morning and their poo seems normal and no signs of any inflamation at all. The spines are all straight.

They are all ganging together as normal. However the 2 that died, as they became weaker, couldn't keep up with the group as they swam.

Any other options.

This is a long shot but the last time I had platies they all died in exactly the way you described, grim to watch.

I eventually discovered that my water company had been cleaning the pipes, they did this once every three months for about a year, it sometimes altered the pH of the water but other then that the water was the same.

I had three major outbreaks and each time treated with meds and nothing worked or even made a difference.

when I got the information from the Water company it lined up with a lot of my unexplained deaths. my platies were the worst affected, along with two keyhole cichlids. it would take ages to explain now i really have to go shopping for christmas wellies but I would contact your water company.

I appreciate that is much more likely that you have a bacteria or virus but I messed about for a year before asking the water company!

have you tried Primafix? that is fab for internal bacteria etc?

Any signs of fish flicking and rubbing against objects or laboured breathing, as flukes can make them lose weight.

No as I have said they are showing no other signs of illness.

I have posted in chit chat and someone has suggested I try wormer plus as there has been good results in clowns with skinny disease.

I will give it a go and post what happens.
