Should I treat them before they go in? if so, how?

You could probably rinse them in the sink just to get any debris off, but as long as they are made for aquariums they should be fine.

If you're not wanting to use real plants, it's better to use silk plants than plastic ones. Plastic can rip fish fins.

Most say real is better than fake, but personally, I've only had bad experience with real. . .suddenly tons of algae and now have found two snails even though I washed my real plants really well!
