Do plants react badly to swift temperature changes like fish do? Or does it not affect them as much?

Depends on the plants. Some are extremely sensitive to any changes and others could practically care less. I'm not an expert on plants though so I couldn't tell you just what is and isn't okay with sudden changes.

Plants do not react so swiftly to temperature changes as fish. As Teelie said different plants react differently to long term changes.

To cut a long story short, if you added water which is at a lower (not too much :) ) temperature to the tank, the plants would be able to cope quite well.

I treat the plants to the same temp changes as I do my fish. They are both living organisms and I treat them as such. HOWEVER, I have been known to bring home plants from the lfs (25 miles away) at 40 below zero and dump them in the tank, I would not do the same to fish...

Most sudden changes don't bother plants, unless it is curnent. But long term changes can, if a plant is grown in 72f and 6.8 ph and then goes to 82f and 8.2ph it can kill off the plant. This is why some plants die back when you first get them.
