ive had 4 plants in my tank for around a month now and want to plant them properly, taking out the plant pots etc, all the plants have a sponge like material round the bottom of them, do I need to take this off when taking them out the plant pots ? along with the weights that are round them as well ?

The weights are keeping the plants sunk, so keep those on. Most potted plants come with wool around the roots and you'll want to remove it.

Make sure when you replant them that you know which plants want to be planted in the substrate and which need their roots to be in the open water.

right ok, more research needed - and guess what ive thrown away the names of my plants !! i do know 2 are amazon swords the others I have no idea,

You don't need the weights, substrate should hold the plants down

I take off the wool and the weights...it only takes a few days for the plants to root and hold themselves down. Also I cut the existing roots with sharp scissors to about 1 inch of length...seems to promote new root growth.

Should but not always. Especially if you're like me and have cories who like digging a moat around anything you care to stick in the substrate. Never hurts to put weights on plants to be on the safe side. It's better than coming home to find that the aquascape you put so much work into floating at the top of your tank now.

Also worth remembering that not all plants should be planted in the substrate and some will rot away if you do so.

The tips of one of mine is going a orange / brown colour so needs a trim lol do I literally just cut it off will post a pic later when I can dig out my camera
