Someone suggested it would be good to get some plants in my mbuna (going through fishless cycle) but I thought cichlids tended to just rip them up? I wouldnt mind having some but what would work well with sand substrate?

Mbuna would probably rip up most plants but Vallisneria are biotope correct and will hold up to the attentions of the fish.

I had some Vallis which was shredded to peices by my mbuna within a few days.. the only plant of mine that they left alone was the Anubias.

I guess it's hit and miss mixing plants w/cichlids. I have some java moss that's held up quite well lately. I thought I lost it, but then found it behind the rock work...lol. I put it back in place. I've had some Java fern in my tank for a bit, just small pieces. They do seem to be ok with the fish. I guess it helps that one fish species is a carnivore and the other two are omnivores. They aren't strictly vegetarians so that may give my plants a better shot???maybe :)

Try:
Java Moss
Java fern
and
Anubias, Vallis like was previously mentioned in above posts.
