Plants?

I was wondering, do plants help your tanks cycleing process, or hurt it. I would think they help, but then the dead material may hurt them. What are the ins and outs here?

it generally helps, the plants can use ammonia and nitrate although with a heavilly planted tank you might need co2 and that reduces the oxygen levels in the tank so the less fish u can keep, if uve ever seen those huge dutch aquariums theres hardly any fish in them!

I don't understand what you mean by "dead materials may hurt them".
