will plants be able to survive with no fish in, im setting up an aquarium and wanted to put plants in a week before i introduce fish, is that ok?

Yes, it's fine. I often do this so the plants have a chance to root in a bit before I add fish and the water change routine starts.

How are you going to cycle though? If you're going to do a fishless cycle it's better to wait until that's finished before you add plants.

As long as you pick species that are suitable, you don't have too much light and your water contains minerals.

Can you explain why its better to wait for the fishless cycle to finish? I'm in the process of fishless cycling my tank and I added 4 plants a week after I started and they are doing really well. From reading other forums this isn't a problem for the cycling but then again I have read some people saying you should wait but never understood why... Should I not have put the plants in?

Thanks, Phil

I agree it's mostly so you can cycle in darkness and not enourage algae.

The reason why your plants aren't doing too well maybe any one of these; they're not true aquatic plants; they are true aquatics but have ben cultivated out of water and need to adapt back; there's not enough nutrients in your tank for them; your water might be too hard or too soft.
