Hey all,

I was just wondering if I should plant my tank whilst cycling, before I have any fish or after cycling? What would be best for the plants or wouldn't it make a difference?

Thanks,
Josh.

you're using ammonia??

if so, then i'm afraid it's best to wait Josh. As you know plants need light, cycling with ammonia is done best without the lights on. For one main reason...Ammonia + Light = Algae.

Okay, that's not a problem :)

I'll make sure I don't get impatient

I have fishlessly cycled a number of planted tanks and always set them up, planted them and then begin the cycling with ammonia. The thing is the plants eat ammonia which is why the more high tech planted tanks will often have 0 nitrates and one must actually add them. because the plants in them consume the ammonia, there is almost not nitrite and no nitrate. plants can use it all.

In a more moderately planted tank, the kind most folks will have, then the plants will consume some of the ammonia but not all. The rest will go for the needed bacteria. However, due to the plants, the size of the bacterial colonies will be smaller than they would were there no plants.

If you cycle the tank without the plants and then add them what will happen is some of the bacteria you worked to establish will die back when you add the plants which will then begin to consume some of the food that would be available to your bacteria.

Normally one can expedite a fishless cycle by raising the tank temps into the mid 80sF (about 30C) or more. Most plants wont be happy at these temps which means you cant do the temp raising while cycling a planted tank with ammonia. However, the fact that the plants assume some of the work of the bacteria means you need fewer bacteria which means it takes less time to reach that number.

My tank isn't yet planted, I just didn't know if I should plant it now or after the cycle. The water is currently at 26˚C so I think I shall raise it to 30˚C as you said. I need to do everything I can to speed up the cycle as I am doing it without any mature media added.

If I add plants after the cycle, will the "food that would be available to your bacteria" be used up excessively so I enter another mini cycle or is it nothing to be worried about?

I ran a tank through a cycle using plants + ammonia. However I actually waited for the filter to start to show signs of Nitrite reduction so effectively a few weeks away from a perfect Fishless cycle. I then dropped some plants in (planted them how I wanted) started a small amount with the light and built it up about a week later I was able to do a full dose of Ammonia with no trace of ammonia or Nitrite.

There was no algae that appeared however I believe that was due to the stage I was at in the cycle, which possibly could involve something to do with the ammonia only lasting a small amount of time before being processed.

No mini cycle :)

I am old and probably old fashion too. I use the old original fishless cycling method which used drops/10 gals for cycling and then for holding the cycle until fish are added. I also use a variation to determine when a tank is cycled. I add 4 drops of ammonia for every 10 gals and then test in 60-90 mins. If the ammonia reads 0 and I have no nitrites, its ready to go.

This method doesn't care if its bacteria or plants eating the ammonia or some combo of the two. All it tells me is the tank can handle a full fish load at that time or not.

I think it might be best for me to wait until near to the end or the actual end of my cycle to get some plants in then. :)

Now I'm having doubts!

I really want to get some plants in. I've decided algae won't be a problem as I plan to stock some plecs once I've cycled.

Hmm, not sure though...

Plecs aren't an algae removal solution. It tends to be on younger plecs that eat algae and the plec you buy may not eat the stuff!

What plec are you after? I'm looking at either an L200 or an L260 (or Both!)

I don't know to be honest, I want at least one type of Bristlenosed Plec.
